The BackBlast:
As my good friend THE Blue Tornado says it is always about the playlist and what you choose to do for the workout is secondary. 🙂 Adhering to that logic, yours truly did his best to come up with a good theme playlist for a chilly low 30’s Thursday. In 1983, a movie came out that featured a number of up and coming stars playing Michigan grads who were reuniting after being apart for 15 years. The soundtrack from The Big Chill, while having nothing to do with weather, seemed like an appropriate set of tunes for our group since most of us think we are in better shape (mentally, emotionally and definitely physically) than we were in college, plus our Meltdowner Sparty is a Michigan lad and it was chilly! So here is what we did.
As the Motown heavy playlist blasted away, we did SLUGS which are a set of kettlebell exercises followed by a short run ending in three merkins. Groans across the board. Next we went to the rails, transitioned to Jack Webbs (crowd pleaser exercise) and then to our friend Shelter #6 for bench exercises.
Next we did BLIMPS at the lights around the lake and then circled back to the AO for some way backs and a round of Mike Tysons and tricep extensions.
If you want your group to be forced to enjoy the music you like, Q Core Meltdown. Most of the time you are in a group throwing metal around so they have no choice but to listen to music which was popular 40 years ago but is still timeless.
Here is a plug for an upcoming Core event: on December 17 Splinter hosts the annual Running of the Cans. We start at the Myers Park Traditional AO and run and ruck canned goods to the Hillside drop off and enjoy the lights while giving back to those in need. Come join us!
