The BackBlast:

While I know the purpose of gathering at 5:30 in the morning is for the workout the purpose of the workout is for the playlist. And I got to tell you I put 10 times as much effort into the playlist as I did putting together the workout. That’s because the workout was already put together. I have about 15 or 20 workouts already printed up sitting in a file. So I grabbed the workout and then started on the playlist. However, like all good workouts we started off with the standard. Cuz no matter how funky you want to be you still have to maintain your standards.

Immediately after that we utilized a timer workout. Yes it was a Tabata timer but it was not a Tabata workout. You had 10 exercises that you did 10 reps of each in about 4 minutes. If you got done early you got the rest. And then we did it again and again and again and again and again and again and again. 8 *times at which point we decided since we only had a few minutes left we would allow the pax to pick an exercise and we would do 10 of those. I don’t recall each exercise verybody picked but I’m damn sure it wasn’t one of the exercises we’d already done.
The KB exercises done with the timer were: Renegade Row Left and Right, Tricep Extensions, Hammer Curls, Romanian Dead Lifts left and Right, Cleans Left and Right, Wood Choppers left and right.

It is with great confidence that I state that the playlist for today’s meltdown workout is the greatest playlist in the history of f3. Not because of the songs but because of the connection of all of the songs. Try to pay attention—a lot of work went into developing this lineage and I don’t have time to repeat myself.
It started with When Love Comes to Town which is by U2 and b.b. King. I kind of randomly started there .That led to BB King and Eric Clapton (Hold On, I’m Comin’). next was a version of “After Midnight by Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. Next “Give Me Some Loving by the Spencer Davis Group which features Steve Winwood. Steve Winwood also played in Blind Faith which allowed us to cover their version of “Whole Lotta Love”. Blind Faith included Ginger Baker who is also in Cream. So we got to listen to “ I Feel Free” . Jack Bruce played bass with Cream and then played with Leslie West. Leslie West had the band Mountain which allowed us to listen to “Mississippi Queen” . Felix Pappalardi played bass with Mountain and with “The Youngbloods which allowed us to play “Get Together”.
So far this is a plausible and straight line which I think anybody would believe without checking my references. At this point however you’re not going to where we go next. Turns out one of the guys in the Youngbloods named Jerry Corbett co-wrote “Insane in the Brain by Cypress Hill. Cypress Hill had a percussionist named Eric Bobo who performed with the Beastie Boys. This led us to “Sabotage”. Producer Mike D from The Beastie Boys produced Portugal. The Man which allowed us to hear “Feel It Still”. Portugal the Man played with The Revivalists in New Orleans. Which allowed us to hear “Stand Up” . The Revivalists Played with Galactic which got us to “Hey Na Na”. Galactic played with “Ms. Charm” which got us to Right On.”

Yes, this is a wonderful way for me to spend my time. Drawing the line from U2 through BB King to Eric Clapton through Steve Winwood through Leslie west…..ahhh…you already read that part.

I’m just glad I got a place to go where such things are important.
